Key Replacement

Lost every car key in San Diego? Learn when mobile replacement is possible, what to have ready, what the quote includes and when towing may be necessary.

1

A practical starting point

Losing your only car key does not automatically mean a trip to the dealership. A mobile automotive locksmith may be able to make a replacement where your car is parked. The deciding factors are your vehicle's key system, available parts, the work required and access to the vehicle.

Before paying for a tow, call with your vehicle details and ask whether an all-keys-lost replacement can be completed at its current location.

2

What to have ready when you call

Give the year, make and model, and explain whether the car uses a turn-key ignition or push-button start. Say that all keys are lost. Adding a spare while a working key remains can be a different job.

Tell us whether the car is locked and where it is parked. For a garage or gated property, include the level, entrance instructions and any access restrictions. Ask which identification and ownership or authorized-use documents to have ready.

If a key is present but the car will not start, describe that problem instead. A starting fault is not necessarily a lost-key or programming problem.

3

Unlocking the car is only one part of the job

Opening a locked door does not provide a key that starts the engine. Depending on the vehicle, the replacement can involve cutting a blade, programming an electronic key or fob, and testing its functions.

Ask for the complete quote: vehicle access if needed, the key or fob, blade cutting, programming, labor, travel and applicable tax. Also ask what could change the estimate after inspection. Agree on additional work before it begins.

When another arrangement may be needed

Some key systems require manufacturer-specific procedures or equipment available at a workshop or dealership. A vehicle fault, missing parts or unsuitable access can also change the plan.

Ask whether the vehicle must be moved before arranging transport. If towing is necessary, confirm the destination and appointment first so the car reaches a provider who can carry out the work.

6

Before relying on your replacement

Check engine starting, the applicable door locks and remote buttons with the technician. If the fob has an emergency blade, ask how it is used. Keep the receipt and ask about the part and labor warranty.

If you receive two keys, test both and keep the spare separately. A spare left inside the car cannot help you during a lockout.
