Locked Out of Your Car in San Diego? What to Do

Keys locked in your car in San Diego? Safety first, what to tell the locksmith, what it costs (from $95, all-inclusive) and how long it takes.
Check Safety First
If a child, pet or anyone else is locked inside – especially on a warm day – call 911 first. Don’t wait for a locksmith.
Otherwise, take a breath and check your pockets, bag and the people you are with. Then look through the windows: are the keys visible on a seat, in the ignition, or not there at all?
Locked In or Missing? They Are Different Jobs
If the keys are inside, you need a lockout – we open the door and you are on your way. If the keys are gone, you need a new key cut and programmed; we can do both in the same visit.
What to Tell the Locksmith
Have a photo ID ready that matches the registration or rental agreement. If those papers are locked inside, we check them once the door is open.
- Year, make, model and color of the car
- Exact location – street and cross street, or the garage name, level and space
- Where the keys are (seat, ignition, trunk) or that they are missing
- Any gate, attendant or parking-garage entry instructions
How the Car Gets Opened
We use non-destructive lockout tools: an inflatable air wedge with a long-reach tool, or a precision automotive lock pick. No broken glass, no bent door frames. Please don’t try a coat hanger or a slim-jim on a modern car – it can damage the door wiring and airbag sensors.
What It Costs and How Long It Takes
With Auto Key SD, car lockouts start at $95, all-inclusive – travel, labor and tax. We confirm the price on the phone before we come out.
We work Monday–Saturday, 9 AM–6 PM, with evening calls by arrangement, and are closed Sunday. During business hours we are typically 20–40 minutes away in most of San Diego. Call or text (619) 535-8000.
