Buying a Key Fob Online? Check This Before Programming

A fob that looks like your original may still be the wrong replacement. Before ordering, have the correct part number checked against your vehicle's VIN and confirm that the provider doing the programming will accept the part.

Auto Key SD accepts customer-supplied keys and fobs when they are brand new, never used, and matched to the correct vehicle part number using the VIN. A listing that says “fits your car” or “ready to program” is not enough by itself.

Similar shells and button layouts can contain different electronics. Share the product listing, part information, vehicle year, make and model before buying. VIN-based part matching helps identify the right replacement; it does not guarantee that an individual part is free from defects.

Arrange to share the VIN directly with the provider rather than posting it in public comments or photos.

For customer-supplied parts, Auto Key SD's acceptance policy does not include previously used or refurbished keys and fobs. If the seller's description is unclear, ask before ordering. An unused-looking shell does not establish the history of the electronics inside.

Other providers may have different policies. Do not assume a used fob can be reset or programmed simply because it comes from the same brand of vehicle.

Check whether you are buying a complete key or fob, a replacement shell, or a part without the required electronics. A shell can change the outer housing without providing a new electronic key.

If an emergency blade is included, it may still need cutting. Programming and blade cutting are separate tasks. Ask which work your vehicle needs and whether those services are included in the programming quote.

Tell the provider if you are adding a spare or have lost every key. The required procedure and price can differ. Bring all remaining keys to the appointment so the provider can explain which should remain authorized and test the agreed functions.

A remote that locks the doors is not, by itself, proof that the car will start with that key. Check both functions where applicable.

Add the purchase price to the expected cutting, programming, labor and travel charges. Read the seller's return terms, especially any conditions that apply once programming has been attempted.

Before booking, ask how an incompatible or defective supplied part would be handled, whether any assessment or attempted-programming charge applies, and who covers the part and programming work. Get those answers before paying; they should not be assumed from the fob's purchase price.
