Compare vehicle compatibility, parts, transport, appointments, itemized pricing and warranty before choosing a locksmith or dealership for a replacement key.

1

Start with Compatibility, Not a Universal Winner

A locksmith and a dealership are not interchangeable for every vehicle. Ask each provider whether they can handle your exact year, model and key system, including an all-keys-lost situation if that applies. Some requests require manufacturer-specific access or a workshop visit.

Neither option is always cheaper or faster. Compare current, vehicle-specific answers instead of generic savings claims. If one provider cannot support the car, ask what the next practical option is before paying for a visit.

2

When a Mobile Locksmith May Be Practical

For a supported vehicle, mobile car key replacement may avoid bringing the car to another location. Confirm that the work can actually be completed where the car is parked; access restrictions, vehicle faults or the required equipment can make another arrangement necessary.

Tell the locksmith whether a key remains, whether the car is locked and which functions have failed. Unlocking the door, cutting a blade and programming an electronic key are different tasks. Get a quote for the complete job, not only one step.

3

When to Ask the Dealership

Contact the dealership if independent support has not been confirmed, manufacturer-specific parts or procedures are required, or you want to ask about an applicable vehicle warranty. Coverage is a question for the provider; a lost key is not automatically covered.

Ask whether parts must be ordered, which documents are required, whether the vehicle must be present and how to arrange an appointment or transport. Do not assume every dealership has a compatible replacement in stock or can finish the work the same day.

4

Use the Same Questions for Both Providers

What exact part will be supplied, and is it original manufacturer equipment or aftermarket? Does the full quote include cutting, programming, labor, travel or transport and applicable tax? What can change after inspection?

When can the work be arranged, where will it happen and what warranty covers the part and labor? If the keys were stolen, ask separately about removing electronic authorization and addressing mechanical lock access.

Before payment, test the applicable locks, remote functions and engine starting with the provider. Request an itemized receipt. A brand logo or similar-looking fob alone is not evidence of compatibility or manufacturer authorization.
